An architect's own lakeside home comes to market in Rockingham

Designed and built by architect David Hodge as his own residence, 9 Renegade Path backs directly onto the lake at Renegade Reserve. Offers from $1,099,000 through Elders Real Estate Rockingham & Baldivis; first home open this Saturday.

One of only a handful of Rockingham homes with direct access to a lake, and the first to come to market in recent years, has been listed for sale. The single-level, three-bedroom house at 9 Renegade Path was designed by architect David Hodge for himself, and it reads that way: northern orientation, roof overhangs sized to admit the winter sun and block the summer heat, three-metre ceilings, nine skylights, and openings placed to pull cross-breezes through the house.

It was planned on universal design principles, with step-free entry, wide doorways and hallways and hobless walk-in showers, and it is built for low running costs: underfloor heating, zoned reverse-cycle air conditioning, ceiling fans in every room, an 11 kW solar array on a battery-ready inverter and an EV charging outlet in the garage.

Outside, a merbau entertaining deck has its own outdoor shower, a second deck opens off the dining room towards the water, and a private gate leads to the lakeside path at Renegade Reserve, where the owners have counted more than 30 bird species. Lake Richmond is 400 metres away and Palm Beach a 20-minute walk.

"Because an architect built it for himself, the decisions we would have agonised over were already made. What we did not expect was how much the lake would become part of daily life." (The owners)

The home is listed with Shaun Groves of Elders Real Estate Rockingham & Baldivis. The first home open is Saturday 10 October, 10:00 to 10:30 am. The full listing, floor plan and video walk-through are on realestate.com.au and at onthelake.info.

FOUR WAYS INTO THE STORY
1. Built by an architect, for himself. With no client to compromise with, every decision was tuned to this block: the orientation, the overhangs, the ceiling heights, the skylights, the way air moves through the rooms. The kitchen is bespoke, with an island bench, induction cooktop and double rangehood.
2. A home that will still fit at eighty. Universal design, done quietly: step-free entry, wide doorways and hallways, hobless level-access showers, everything on one level.
3. The lake out the back. A private gate opens from the garden onto the lakeside path at Renegade Reserve. The owners have counted more than 30 bird species on and around the water; Lake Richmond is a 400-metre walk.
4. Runs on sunshine. An 11 kW solar array has been running since 2020 on a battery-ready inverter, and the garage has a 32 A three-phase outlet for an EV.
